<p>The 137th AS is the flying unit of the group, with the C-5A operated since 1984. The unit was established as the 137th Fighter Squadron in June 1948 at White Plains, operating the P-47D before changing to a Fighter-Interceptor Squadron with the F-51H in September 1952. The squadron flew the F-94A/B from June 1953 until May 1958 when the newly designated Tactical Fighter Squadron adopted the F-86H. The 105th TFG was organized at the same time. The unit was redesignated an Aeromedical Transport Squadron with the C-97A before becoming an Air Transport Squadron and Military Airlift Squadron in 1966 with the C-97G. It changed to a Tactical Air Support Squadron in March 1970 with the U-3A assigned and re-equipped with the O-2A in April 1971. The squadron reverted to an MAS when the C-5A entered service, thereby converting from one of the smallest aircraft in ANG service to the largest. The unit relocated to Stewart ANGB conversion to the C-5A began.
